Understanding Development

Development is the process that creates growth, progress and positive change. It involves a physical, economic, environmental, and social component. The result of this process is a rise in the level and quality of life for all.

It also includes eradicating poverty and illiteracy. Moreover, it promotes industrialization and increases economic growth by providing better infrastructure and jobs. It is vital for a country to have enough resources for its people in order to make it a developed society. Some of the most important factors that contribute to a country’s development include good education, high literacy rate, and access to advanced medical facilities.

Achieving development is not easy. There are many countries that are still in the process of becoming a developed nation. However, every nation tries its best to modernize its surroundings in the most efficient way possible. Some of the methods that are used by these nations include providing more schools, training their employees in various skills and enhancing their overall performance at work.

Human scale development calls for a more direct and participatory democracy, where the state gives up its traditional paternalistic and welfareist role in favour of facilitation in enacting and consolidating people-centred processes. It also requires the nurturing of diversity instead of being threatened by it, and encouraging rather than repressing emerging social movements that reflect the people’s need for autonomy and space. This new understanding of development, based on complexity science, is now beginning to gain prominence in the field of development studies.
