The Concept of Fashion


Fashion is a cultural phenomenon that encompasses the latest trends in clothing, accessories, and footwear. This is a rapidly changing field, influenced by both social and economic changes. In order to be considered fashionable, a particular item must have wide acceptance and widespread awareness. The concept of Fashion is closely linked to the idea of culture and identity, as well as a sense of belonging.

As a business, fashion is a trillion dollar global industry, with millions of people involved in its creation, distribution and sale. Its influence is felt through a variety of mediums including print and electronic media, TV shows, movies, music, billboards, and advertising hoardings. Fashion varies by region and even within the same society as different age groups, classes, and genders have their own established styles.

In its most basic form, fashion is a way of communicating one’s personality through style. It can be an understated whisper or a high-energy scream; it can tell a story, send a message or express solidarity. The way that we dress can define us, give others clues about our values and beliefs.

It can also be a tool of rebellion, such as when the young ripped their parents’ clothes in protest against the Vietnam War. Throughout history, fashion has been used as an indicator of social status, power, wealth and influence. From the seventeenth century onwards, the upper classes were seen to display their wealth and power through elaborately designed clothing.
