Issues in Music

issues

A topic or situation that requires consideration, discussion, and action. It can be a personal or professional matter, for example: a person who loses his temper easily has anger management issues, or a company struggling with finances has financial issues. In the context of a law suit, a plaintiff or defendant will present a list of issues that they want the court to address.

The etymology of the word issue suggests that it was once a way of putting something out. For instance, a celebrity might issue a statement, or the post office might issue new stamps, thereby “issuing” them for public consumption. More recently, however, the term has come to be associated with a problem or concern. In college writing, you may be asked to analyze an issue and offer your own stance on it. Examples might include governmental spending, environmental protection, and bias in news coverage.
